Chapter 34

Vanessa had told husband, Martin that Kevin had pleaded with her to go to an important meeting with him. Martin thought it unusual as she rarely showed any interest in his work and never wanted to accompany him. On the positive side, he could spend the day on the golf course without any concern for his wife.

Brother and sister set off for the north-east early on the following Monday morning and arrived in Middlesbrough by mid-morning. They soon found the targeted address which was situated in the middle of a rundown council estate to the south of the town. It was a typical British estate that had been rapidly built in the 1960’s, with proud householders then but gradually there was a decline and a decay in the upkeep of the properties as well as changing tenants who cared less and less about their environment and their neighbours. Kevin had undertaken some research on the internet and the results showed that burglary, joy riding and drug abuse was rife and if the internet was to be believed, the area was inhabited solely by benefit claimants, smackheads and pregnant teenagers.

Kevin found that the area was extremely quiet with very few people around, possibly because it was the wrong time of day for drug taking, car stealing and copulating, although the latter was possibly more of an indoor activity, even for this area. He soon found the house; it was at the end of a street where access was reasonably good but observation poor. They would stick out like a pork sausage at a bar mitzvah

“What are we going to do then?”

“I’ve got an idea” replied Kevin and did a fast three-point turn. He headed for town. Kevin explained what he had in mind

“You’re joking” was Vanessa’s reply. His looked told her that he was serious. She gave an air of resignation and after discussions of how they would formulate their plan; they were soon in the town centre. They parked in a street with limited parking as they were visiting only one shop each. Kevin found his shop, a stationers-cum-printers and ordered a set of business cards. Vanessa, meanwhile found a charity shop. She soon found the type of clothes that she was looking for, muttering to herself that never in a thousand years would she ever choose those clothes for herself.

The lady in the shop was surprised when she asked and then insisted on a changing room. They finally acceded to her demands by offering a storeroom. Vanessa emerged looking very uncomfortable and scowled at Kevin who was laughing at her after she came around the corner. He could not believe his sister would actually agree but here she was, now attired in a tight red low-cut t-shirt, tight white mini-skirt which barely covered her features and bright orange sandals.

“You never dressed like that even in your wildest days” he said to her, laughing

“I feel like a common tart and if you ever say anything about this to anyone, you’re dead.
